In 2005 we began the first annual summer school program for students at the elementary school. With contributions and donations from various groups in the United States, we were able to offer classes in english, art, and physical education, as well as science, math, reading, and communications. This provides an educational alternative for young children who normally spend their summer days making bricks or looking after their younger siblings.
In addition to new classrooms and educational materials, we provide a daily breakfast of fruit and bread for each student who attend summer classes. For many, this is one of their only meals of the day. Through these classes we not only offer educational reinforcement, but more importantly, we create a second home for our students. The classroom becomes a place where children feel safe and receive the unconditional love and positive reinforcement that many lack in their own homes.
